Whether you’re shopping Independence Day sales or buying basics for yourself, you stand to earn considerably more cash back this weekend.

The cash-back website Rakuten is offering triple cash back on purchases — online or in stores — from roughly 140 retailers and other merchants.

Mind you, the cash back you earn via Rakuten is in addition to any cash back you might earn from paying with a rewards credit card — and any savings you snag from shopping sales. So, you stand to see some deep discounts overall on purchases from those 140 places.

As of late Friday, Rakuten boasted more than 60 offers for triple cash back online and more than 80 for in stores.

Just to name a few, the retailers where you can earn triple cash back on online purchases include:

  • Ace Hardware: 6% cash back as of Friday
  • Forever 21: 15%
  • Lands’ End: 6%
  • Macy’s: 6%
  • Nike: 8%
  • Olay: 15%
  • Sunglass Hut: 12%

Retailers where you can earn triple cash back on in-store purchases include:

  • Calvin Klein: 6% cash back as of Friday
  • Crocs: 4%
  • H&M: 4.5%
  • Levi’s: 7.5%
  • Nautica: 12%
  • Sally Beauty: 4.5%

How Rakuten works

Rakuten is a cash-back portal. By doing your online shopping through its website or app, or using its browser extension, you’ll earn cash back — during this promotion and in the future — on purchases from any of thousands of retailers and other merchants that partner with Rakuten.

How is that possible? It’s simple: Rakuten receives a commission from retailers for referring online shoppers to those retailers’ websites. Then, Rakuten shares that commission with shoppers.

It’s free to sign up for a Rakuten account, and it’s free to use the portal. To see an example of how Rakuten works, check out “If You’re Not Getting Cash Back When Shopping Online, Use This Trick.”

Rakuten is among the oldest and best-known cash-back portals, but it’s not the only one. Others include TopCashback and Ibotta.

Even if you already have a Rakuten account, you might want to check out other cash-back portals because different portals often offer different cash-back percentages for a given retailer.
